How care works

What "Could use a catch-up" and "Your care for others" mean, how Shep works them out from your catch-ups, and who can see them.

Shep doesn't grade people. It notices when it's been a while since someone had a catch-up, so no one slips through.

Care for one person

For each person you walk with, Shep looks at your recent catch-ups with them and compares that with a steady rhythm: by default, a one-on-one every fortnight.

  • 100%: you're keeping that rhythm. Shep shows Caught up.
  • 50–99%: Catch-up due soon.
  • Under 50%: about a missed fortnight or more. Could use a catch-up.

Older catch-ups count for less as time goes on, so a long chat three months ago doesn't keep someone off your list forever.

Your church can change the rhythm (say, monthly instead of fortnightly) in Settings → Care rhythm. Only admins and owners can change it.

Your care for others

The number on Today is the average across everyone you walk with. Prayer relationships don't count: they're about praying, not catching up.

What counts

Counts towards care Doesn't count
Catch-ups logged between you and the people you walk with (oversight or peer) People you only pray for
Catch-ups logged for several people at once Posts and responses on Church

Who sees it

  • You see your own numbers on Today, and a label for each person on People.
  • The person you walk with never sees the care number about them, and it's never in emails or push notifications. Those only say things like "could use a catch-up".
